Customized xsl template?

Just curious – is there a way to theme-override the sitemap.xsl file? I’m looking for something update-proof of course.
Taking a look at
sitemap-core.php:837it looks like there’s an opportunity to parse the active theme directory before falling back on the plugin directory sitemap.xsl.Ideas?
