Customize new user registration email

I know this can be solved with plugins but the ones I’ve tried conflict with another plugin I have installed to use Gmail smtp. I’d like to modify the WordPress code to hard code my custom registration email. I’m quite comfortable with PHP but I’ve been looking through various files trying to find where the email is sent but haven’t had any luck finding it so far. Can someone point me in the right location?
