• I need a way for some of my registered customers to order on my site without being charged sales tax.

I need to manually set their account to exempt. I don’t want everyone to be able to click a box that causes tax not to be charged. They must be registered and I must have authorized the exemption after registration.

Thanks but that doesn’t help me. This should be included in the WC platform especially since the US government is getting their hands dirty with sales taxes.

I completely agree, it really should be part of the platform, if only as a checkbox. In general, it’s probably easier to deal with the few customers who might abuse this feature, rather than having to reimburse all those who are legitimately tax exempt. I think I’ll probably end up coding it that way.

It needs to be set up so that only an admin or editor can change the customer’s status to exempt, not the customer. I can’t have customers decide they are exempt when they aren’t then get stuck with owing the tax myself nor can I have exempt customers get charged tax then have to reimburse them. Crediting sales tax is a huge pain.

I too am looking for a solution to this. If any of us find an answer, I hope we will take the time to post it here.

There’s also an issue that if you set up tax by zip code, if the customer enters their zip +4, it won’t charge them any sales tax.

Interesting. That just might work for me. By the way I contacted WooThemes support and got a reply very quickly which also might work. I haven’t explored it yet. Here is what they said:

    Hi there,
I’m afraid this is not a standard WooCommerce feature. I’d recommend using our Disability VAT Exemption. You should hopefully be able to tweak it to meet your requirements.
    Thanks

I had the same problem. I am now using sales tax table from https://www.woosalestax.com. Their zip code level table solved this problem by charging zip+4 at zip code level. Hope this help.

I just found this WooCommerce Checkout Manager Pro plugin at https://www.trottyzone.com that says one of its features is to allow customers to remove tax (tax exempt) that might be worth trying. I ended up modifying the WooCommerce VAT plugin but this plugin might be a better solution. Appreciate feedback from anyone that tries it.
