Custom Theme Updates

I am well versed with creating sutom themes but I would like to know how to set up wordpress theme updates for themes I have made in the past on my server so that clients will get a notification of an update. Do I set up a domain folder as the theme_uri in style.css and insert the zip with new update or do I have to set up a whole WP site with the new theme activated?
