Custom Theme – Register Widget Support NOT in the Sidebar

Hi all,

I’m developing a custom WordPress site for someone and I’m trying to register a widget area (I want to add a ‘subscribe’ button to the bottom of each blog post). Every tutorial I look at to add widget support to my theme starts with registering a sidebar. I do not have nor do I want a sidebar on this site. How can I add widget support and add a widget area at the bottom of my blog posts without also registering a sidebar?
