custom taxonomy to upload pdf file

Hi,

I have been using custom post types to create new pages, but I was wondering if it’s possible to create a custom taxonomy that would allow you to upload a PDF file.
I understand that I could insert/upload it like I would a normal image, but I don’t want to insert it in the post. That would require too much explaining to the user. I want to have a separate box – like the featured image – where they can select a PDF file to upload, and then set the template page to display that pdf file as a link in a certain position on the page (maybe with a nice little pdf icon to go with it, for good measure).

I’ve been digging through the forums all day, and I’ve found lots of people searching for something like this, but I haven’t found any good solutions.

Does anyone have any ideas???
