custom SMTP connection causes error 500

    Trying to set up a custom SMTP connection causes an error 500, here’s the relevant part of the logs: https://pastebin.com/dzDfygjV

    Apparently the generating of a key fails and it ends up NULL.

    I suspect the main problem is the small business hosting company (I never needed an SMTP plugin when hosting on a major webhost) but the error should probably be fixed nonetheless.

    Thanks for getting in touch and sharing the logs. When you get a chance, could you please share details on how you’re setting up a custom SMTP connection? There should not be an issue with a small web hosts with custom SMTP as well. In the meantime, please make sure you do not have other SMTP or related plugins installed on yoursite.

    Hi Sanjeev,

    I don’t even get to the form where one would enter SMTP connection details.
    Just selecting “Custom SMTP connection” (I’m translating from German) then clicking on “Save and continue” results in the mentioned error.
    There are no other SMTP plugins installed.

    Hi @khrismuc,

    Thanks for the details! You can configure the SMTP manually by going to WP Mail SMTP > Settings > Other SMTP. Here’s the screenshot for quick reference. We also have documentation on setting up the Other SMTP.

    Once, you set up the Other SMTP, please send a test email from WP Mail SMTP > Email Test. If you get any error, please share a full error. Here’s a screenshot for the option to get a full error log.

    If you see the errors you’ve shared in Pastebin in the initial post, could you please share the version of PHP, WordPress, and list of activated plugins you’re using, or your site health info if possible?
