custom sidebars plugin

I am using the twenty-fourteen theme and can’t seem to get the custom sidebars to work. I’ve used custom sidebars before, but only with pages and it worked fine.
I am using post categories in the menus feature that I would like to go in the sidebars. Nothing. What am I not getting?
