Custom Sidebar column flaws in version 3.0.6
-
The Custom Sidebars column on page and post lists seems to be working just fine in version 3.0.4. In versions 3.0.5 and 3.0.6 there are considerable issues.
I presume 3.0.6 is better than 3.0.5, so I will only talk about 3.0.6 below.
It is difficult to tell exactly what is happening when only seeing the indirect effects, but here is what it appears to be.
The column width (especially on a page list on a wide window) is still too width, and gets wider as the width of the window gets wider.
The placement of the content and the width assigned to the content don’t make sense. As the width of the window gets wider, the width of the content gets wider. The position of the content within the column in a page list seems to be left aligned to a point at approximately 80 or 90% toward the right edge of the column, leaving the remaining 80 or 90% of the column blank.
There are no hard or soft returns added to the content, so that it tries to appear on one line. And since that content starts at 80 to 90% of the way to the right edge of the column, some or most of the content gets cut off and doesn’t show.
On a narrow window, the content width is similarly narrow, and shows little or none of the content.
This leaves the user with a choice of continuing to use version 3.0.4 with perhaps adverse security effects, or turning off the Custom Sidebars column from “Screen Options” at the top of a page list or post list. Of course if that column is turned off, you are unlikely to ever get any additional feedback from your loyal forum readers on the subject of the Custom Sidebar column. That would be a shame, because I think that column works just fine in version 3.0.4 and serves a useful purpose there.
