Custom Sequential Starting Number Order ID for new orders does not work

When setting a custom Sequential Starting Number (in Settings, Misc, Accounting Settings) – like e.g. 1000 – existing orders get updated (after clicking the update link). However, new orders do NOT get the new sequence number – they still get an old /default sequence number – like e.g. 5.
I tried saving the new Sequential Starting Number with Sequential Order Numbers switched off. And, then saving with with Sequential Order Numbers switched on again. But, with no effect.
