Custom scope examples display ALL events

I have tried pasting into functions.php under my child theme, example custom scope code from https://wp-events-plugin.com/tutorials/create-your-own-event-scope/ and also tried it from https://pastebin.com/bgednURB and then made dummy events that meet the filter criteria but when I filter events using the new custom scope on the Events Admin page, ALL events are displayed.

Filtering by any of the scope options already built into the drop down list works just fine.

Any idea what I need to do?
