Custom Profile Page for Contributors

Is it possible to create a custom profile page that a registered user can fill out a few custom fields ?

I’ve played with register-plus, but that only adds fields to the bottom of the profile. I’m wanting to get rid of all the extra tabs and fields and have only my custom fields for this class of user.

I’m creating a business directory, similar to Argyles. He has a redirect to a profile.php that I think is hacked core code, and I don’t want to hack core code. I’m trying to put together an entire business directory plugin that can be used with any theme and any version of WP.
