• The accepted answer is highly voted but it doesn’t work on WordPress 5.2.x or 5.3 (maybe earlier versions as well but I didn’t check)

Also note that the comments on the accepted answer that are most recent also say that they’re still receiving 404’s.

What happened with CPT/Custom Taxonomy rewrites that might have caused this functionality to change since 2015/2016 when the accepted answer was given and voted up.

For my solution I ended up having to use Permalink Manager to handle the need of adding the permalink structure needed for a client project.

The suggested methods work on my site (5.2.4), so I’m not convinced any changes in core code are affecting the use of this technique. Perhaps there is a theme or plugin conflict on your site that is preventing such permalinks from returning the desired post?

It has not been uncommon in the past to need to fix up certain CPT queries through “pre_get_posts” in order to ensure queries return the requested posts. I’ve had no such need lately, but it could be a way to address 404 issues with the suggested methods. Or use a plugin as you have done.
