    right before others rant on,
yes i have read all the other topics similar to this one
yes i have tried all the solutions provided
NO i have not found a solution

    My Problem:
I installed WP on an add-on domain a few weeks back (fine as normal), installed my theme, setup permalinks, made test posts, catergories etc. all tested and working. (site not touched since then)
Now, i go to work on the site and all permalinks are not working and return a 404 error, (the only change made was i updated from 3.1.1 to 3.1.2, then deleted test posts and added new catergories) strange bit is the “post text” is displayed within the 404 message and also “Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start blogging!”, if i revert back to default the links work fine, then when i add custom permalink (that worked fine before) they return 404, it only happens with catergories and posts, i can access profile pages etc.

can anyone shed some light on this please

i have tried adding code in htaccess etc. deleting htaccess, changing chmod permissions, changing permalinks to default and back again

    additional info:
    host: bluehost
mod_rewrite active: yes, default on bluehost (confirmed)
    php version 5.2.17
    WP: 3.1.2
    Active plugins: 0
    Domain: https://askpattaya.com

Thank you in advance to anyone that uses their time to reply.

    just to add:
when using default permalinks all works fine,
any other permalinks will display posts but not catergories,
when using custom structure with %catergory% the posts and catergories return 404,
when using custom structure that does NOT include %catergory% the posts will display but the catergories will not

    another update:
404 error shows ALL posts text within the 404 error message

    Update:
Tried a fresh test install and problem remains, the template i am using also states to use the custom permalink structure in the installation instructions

problem solved, i found line of uneeded code in functions.php

What line of code did you have to remove? I’m having this same problem…

maybe different depending what theme you are using but that is what worked for me i assume you probably have similar issue also contact the theme author to see if others have same issue
