I am running the latest version of WordPress 2.1.2 and want my permalinks to display as:

    /journal/%category%/%postname%/

I have set this up as above in the admin section options>permalinks but it is not working, I get a 404 error when I follow a url.

But if I set it up as:

    /%category%/%postname%/

    it works fine though?

Do you actually have a /journal directory on the site? If so, you can’t use it as a fake directory, because it actually exists.

    Solved it!

The error was caused by me having /journal also set as the category base, which is the option below the Custom permalink structure settings.

so I now have my permalinks as:

    /journal/%category%/%postname%/

    and my category base:

    /archives/

    Works like a charm!
