• Hello,

Looks nice but from what I understand your plugin seems to be using WP’s standard folder structure and that is something really impossible to work with for creating galleries if you have more than a dozen images.

Is there a way, or are you planning to do so, to use custom folders inside the /uploads/ folder?

    Thanks.

Hey John. We aren’t necessarily planning to do so – as the plugin is so new, we’re simply listening to user feedback and will improve the plugin based on demand.

Out of interest, what are the issues with using the WordPress standard folder structure and Media Library?

Thanks for this. Yes, this was a sort of feedback.

Let’s say you have a collection of travel pictures and you want to create galleries out of them. Sorting them (and managing them) in folders with dates is useless. You rather want to have a folder named “Kenya”, another one “Thailand” and so on, and also have subfolders in them because you want to group them by topics.

If you have, say 1000 pictures you certainly don’t want to start uploading them with Media Manager but rather FTP them on server and, moreover, have the plugin to automatically update the galleries when new pictures are uploaded to that folders.

That’s something not really new and some plugins are already addressing this approach in a way or another, but the ones I tried are rather complex to setup.

Hence my feedback here. If you are about to offer yet another plugin that does the same job core WP is doing I don’t well see the interest. Just my two cents.

    +1

Thanks for the feedback John. I understand what you mean completely and will have a think about it for the near future improvements I hope to make.

I wouldn’t say our plugin does the same job as the WordPress Core – the WordPress Core doesn’t give you a panel to manage galleries from; instead you have to go into each post to edit any galleries within it. If you’ve 1000’s of posts with many galleries, that’s not really practical at all.

The idea behind Rocket Galleries was for it to be an extension of the WordPress Core in a way, although it does use a completely different system internally to create and manage galleries. I was hoping to possibly add a feature soon that’d allow users to import all their WordPress galleries from posts/pages and then manage them from the interface Rocket Galleries provides. I think that’d be really helpful and unique.

I like as well what you’ve mentioned and suggested. It’d definitely be a great idea for an extension – that’s the beauty of the way Rocket Galleries has been coded, it’s completely extendable. It’s all early days, but I do think this kind of extension would be first on my list. I can imagine there are loads of users in the same position as yourself ??

    Many thanks for listening.

This was a very first comment as I read a post about your plugin and immediately checked this out – but not yet tried.

I will certainly test it further and I’ll probably get back with other comments as this topic *galleries* is one of my major frustrations with WP.

I might be wrong, but I think one of the big initial misunderstandings when it comes to galleries in WP is that idea (that I never understood) of establishing a whatever relation between image galleries and posts. As far as I’m concerned, they have nothing to do with each other. I never ever wanted to create galleries with pictures taken out of post articles. Strange idea… My image galleries have absolutely no relation whatsoever with posts, except a link between them.

The logic of core WP media manager is based on post publication logic an that’s fine as far as a blog site is concerned. Problem is image galleries are NOT blog posts.

I don’t want to push the debate further here but I’m sure you get the idea. We’ll keep in touch. Thanks!

Yeah I understand you fully. I think those are some very strong points and I’d have very similar feeling to you. I for one think that galleries should be completely separate from posts, hence why I created Rocket Galleries.

Plus, it’s only going to get better as time goes by! ??

Thanks for chiming in John, definitely do keep in touch. Hopefully some day soon the plugin will be perfect for your what you require ??

    Cheers!

PS: for what is worth, you may want to have a look at the best, in my opinion, gallery PHP code out there, but not a WP plugin:
    https://quick.gallery/

… and of course to the worst: Flickr (just to learn what you should never do).

Hahah, I’d be doing myself an injustice if I built the plugin into something like Flickr!

Thanks for providing that link. I’ll have a poke around with that gallery PHP code.
