Custom fields – my total confusion..

I’ve used this plug in off and on for years. And I’ve been able to do some rather cool things with it.
First time I’ve custom fields and attributes though, and I’m getting no where. I’ve moved things around a dozen times today, and although I’m showing info in an individual event, I can’t get it to show in my event list.
Has anyone done simplified setup instructions or a video showing this procedure? I’ve followed the documentation as best as I know how, and so far I’m getting nowhere.
