"Custom fields" missing from template

Custom fields appear as normal on main blog, but not other blogs.
I am pretty sure they were fine a version or two ago, not sure when this changed. Just reported today and searching doc’s & forums yields no answer. Basically, everything I find say it is a default and is there. So… what if it isn’t?!? How do I get it back? (post & pages effected)
