It’s not possible in the latest version.

I added a new filter hook to make it possible. You can try our pre-release version 1.3.53 on our public github repository:

Here’s how you update manually:

After you’ve installed the pre-release version, you try the following code:

  add_filter('um_submit_form_error','um_custom_submit_form_error', 10, 2);
  function um_custom_submit_form_error( $key, $error_message ){

         if( $key == 'first_name' ){
             return 'Oops! First name is required!';
         } 

      return $error_message;
  }
 ?>
