Custom events from other plugins

I am trying to setup a custom event in the activity log that uses an action hook from an external plugin I have installed. I followed the instructions here: https://wpactivitylog.com/support/kb/create-custom-events-wordpress-activity-log/, and was able to get the example working, but when I switched the action hook to the one from the other plugin, it did not work. I use this same hook in other places and it works fine. It seems I may need to setup a custom extension(https://wpactivitylog.com/support/kb/third-party-plugins-extensions/), but it’s unclear to me from the documentation how to do that.
