• I have now edited the 404.php file in the Twenty Ten theme twice. Each time I saved changes, then manually entered a known bad URL for my site. The correct edited 404 page came up.

Each time, the changes have been lost. A couple of days later I go back to my site, look at the 404 page and it is back to its default state.

What could possibly cause this page to revert to the original?

The only theme I have is the default TwentyTen.

Did you upgrade to 3.0.1? That would do it.

Don’t make changes to the default theme directly. Instead you should make a child theme and change that. It will NEVER get overwritten.

actually, this happened *before* I upgraded to 3.0.1

Good idea on the child theme though – thanks!

Did you upgrade the 2010 theme? I know a release came out a bit before 3.0.1 … Or I thought it did.
