I noticed earlier today a message in my dashboard update section telling me to update my parent theme, Magazine Basic, even though I installed the latest version (3.0.4) a couple of years ago and it hasn’t been updated since. Yet, the message says:
“You have version installed. Update to 3.0.4.”
(it does not specify which version I have installed).

Since then, I noticed the theme is no longer displaying an author or version in the theme panel of the dashboard. Instead of the author’s name (C. Bavota) it simply says “Anonymous”. And there is no version indicated.

I have the same theme, same version (3.0.4) installed on my local developer site (MAMP) but it displays the author name and version correctly. It is not asking me to update.

I posted a briefer query in the MB theme support forum earlier today but wanted to updated with info about the author name disappearing. Also, I have since tested with the WordFence security plugin and it did not detect any malware or security problems. Still,

I’m wary about this (unnecessary) “update” I’m being asked to do in case it’s not legit.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I’m not sure how it happened but the version number, Author and Author URI were deleted from the style.css file.

The last time the theme was update was: 10/17/2013.

If I were you I would create a backup just in case and reinstall the theme.

    Thanks, Jose.
I checked in the stye.css file of the live installation and there is no author or version name. The style.css of my MAMP installation does still have them….weird.
I guess I’ll have to reinstall the theme.
Or, could I just copy and paste the contents of the original style.css (latest version) from the MAMP installation into the live site’s style.css file, restoring it that way?

Deleted the theme and reinstalled and things are back to normal now.

    Thanks
