CSS reverts after update

Probably an easy answer but cannot find it.

I made changes to misc things in the CSS file, i.e. font size etc. But after I update the theme or WP it all goes back to the default.

I’m sure I have to create a custom something or other but not sure what or how. Can someone point me in the right direction?
