Crosses and Funky Symbols Showing Up In Place of Spaces & Other Charaters

Help, please! I have a WP site that sometimes displays seemingly random symbols in place of some characters. Most common is a cross shown in place of an HTML space ” “. But there are other crazy issues and it can certainly vary by browser.
