Hi Frank,

Trying the plugin. I can have the options checked for Optimize Javascript and Optimize CSS, but when Optimize HTML is checked, the homepage is a plain white page. That’s one issue we could address later.

I have advanced settings on, and under CSS, under “Inline and Defer CSS?”, I have “Inline “above the fold CSS” checked.

I used the Critical Path CSS Generator site to get the Critical Path CSS, and copied the provided code into the field, saved settings and cleared caches.

When I view the source code in a browser, the single line CSS link is still there, instead of being embedded.

What could be happening?

My client’s site is https://www.chefgorji.com
We are using the Nosh restaurant theme from Themecanon.
All plug-ins are up-to-date.

Thanks for getting back to me quickly. I had the plugin “WP Performance Score Booster” active, so I deactivated it. I’m using “W3 Total Cache” as my main caching plugin. I went into its settings and turned off the minify option.

The code in the page source seems to have changed, and my PageSpeed number for “mobile” seems to have improved slightly (for desktop it’s excellent, so I’m not concerning myself with that one). However, both mobile and desktop still show the dreaded “Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript…”

How would you proceed from here? Thanks in advance.

Try to configure AO to not “force JS in head” and experiment with “inline all CSS” (easy) or “inline & defer CSS” (can be difficult, but is the better solution). Have a look at the FAQ for more info on these topics.

Still trying the options you recommended… still no real improvement overall. If I look at the list of items that Google has listed under “Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript…”, it shows:

I’m assuming these entries are code pointing to sources outside of our domain. How can I possibly ‘remove’ these?

The .JS for SEOGears is probably from code that a (former) SEO company has put on a few of our pages… that I can find and delete. I’m at a loss for the Google fonts CSS. Those are baked into the theme and I don’t think I can really do much there without possibly breaking the entire theme itself.

regarding google fonts; AO doesn’t help there, as those are externally hosted files. only thing you can do is trying to disable google fonts from within autoptimize?

same for piwik & fontawesome actually.

only thing that can be helped by AO is that autoptimize-file; if you “inline all CSS” or “inline & defer” it, you should be able to make that at least that request non-render blocking.
