The site is operating and is currently up on PHP 7.1 but when I update the server to PHP 8.1 my wordpress site crashes with a critical error. When I set it back to 7.1, all is fine.

I contacted my hosting provider and they are saying it is a “script error”

I have tried deactivating all plugins and the theme, but no change. Immediately crashes when I update to 8.1.

    Please help!

    What “script”?

That information should be in the server’s error logs.

Most plugins are still not compatible with PHP v8.1. I’d recommend sticking to 8.0 for the time being, and retry updating in a few weeks (then repeat the process whenever you see fit).
