• After updating to the new version of WordPress, I received the following error message: “There has been a critical error on this website. Learn more about troubleshooting WordPress.”

The wp_debug_log showed errors pointing to two of my installed plugins. Since I’m unable to access the dashboard, I disabled all of the plugins via FTP by renaming the plugins folder. I’m still receiving the same error message, but the wp_debug_log now shows the following and different set of errors:

[15-Apr-2021 15:47:52 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function is_admin() in /home/customer/www/animalsandsociety.org/public_html/wp-includes/rest-api.php:428

    #7 /home/custom in /home/customer/www/animalsandsociety.org/public_html/wp-includes/rest-api.php on line 428

These errors all point toward the wp-includes folder and I’m not sure what to do to fix the problem. I figured maybe those files were edited or corrupted, so I uploaded fresh versions to overwrite any tampered files, but I still received the same error messages.

I’m not sure what else to do so any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I was able to fix the website by recovering the site’s files and database through backups created by our hosting site; however, I would still like to know what could have caused that error, so I don’t come across it later when making future updates.
