Critical Error in checkout page

Hello, I don’t know how, reverting to php 7.4, I managed to get the checkout page without exhausting memory but there is a strange thing happening.

It appears boxed, it seems like a wp error page and the entire website layout inside this box, with the checkout that appears correct.

Anyway if i try to edit the checkout page in Elementor, I get an even more weird output. See attachments.

I’ve checked the error log and screenshot you shared, and it appears there might be a conflict with one of your plugins or the theme.

Even though you’ve disabled your plugins, it might be worth disabling all of them and trying to switch your theme temporarily to a default theme like Storefront to rule out any theme or plugin related issues. You can find a detailed explanation of conducting a conflict test here.

Another possible cause could be a corrupted WordPress installation. You could try re-uploading the WordPress core files to see if that resolves the issue.

Additionally, it’s worth checking with your hosting provider to see if they can provide any insights. They might be able to identify any server-level issues that could be causing this problem.

I did all I could do:

• Reinstalled wordpress 6.3.1
• Deleted woocommerce and tables in databse
• Reinstalled Woocommerce from scratch
• Deleted all products. Just made one for test.
• Disabled all plugins except woocomemrce
• Enabled Storefront theme
• shortcodes are inserted in woo pages (as you can see from Status)

Have you tried flushing your site’s permalinks? You can do this from Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks.

Once there, click the ‘Save Changes’ button (you don’t need to make actual changes), this should re-write the rules for your site’s .htaccess file.

Could you also modify your wp-config file by adding the following details? Furthermore, please install the Query Monitor plugin. This might reveal additional errors that could provide more insights into the problem.

Moreover, the error seems to be linked to a WordPress core file related to the shortcodes functionality. Therefore, it might be worth trying to replace the WooCommerce shortcodes on both the cart and checkout pages with Blocks.

Simply go to each page, remove the shortcode, and add the corresponding block.

Remember to clear all customer sessions from WooCommerce > Status > Tools after doing so.

replacing the shortocode [woocommerce_checkout] with the Gutemberg checkout widget solved the problem! But why? I never thought that this could be the problem, also because I don’l like Gutenberg, I normally use classic editor and Elementor. So there is a problem with the manual shortcode [woocommerce_checkout], both in Classic editor and in Gutenberg editor. And also using the Elementor checkout widget. Consider that I’m using happily elementor widgets for woocommerce pages, in other woocommerce sites, and in this website too in all other woo pages, except checkout (which I found out now). Would be really worthy understand firstly why the simple shortcode does not work.

Can you help on this?

The field Company is missing. I also added some extra field I need to add for tax reasons (italian VAT and italian personal tax code). I used Checkout Filed Editor for Woocommerce (successfully used in other woocommerce websites), and here fields don’t show up.

If I solve one issue, some others got ruined!! it’s a nightmare!

So: shortcode i cannot use it. Elementor I cannot use it. With Gutenberg checkout widget fields are missing.

What the hell should I do now!!!

Glad to know switching to blocks helped, the file that’s causing the memory shortage is from your WordPress core files, it has some functionality for shortcodes (didn’t check it thoroughly to confirm).

The field Company is missing. I also added some extra field I need to add for tax reasons (italian VAT and italian personal tax code). I used Checkout Filed Editor for Woocommerce (successfully used in other woocommerce websites), and here fields don’t show up.

Regarding the Italian tax fields, please reach out to the plugin author for guidance as WooCommerce Blocks do not utilize the same hooks for normal checkout shortcodes.

I also want to clarify that the previous solution was just to buy you time, as I understand you’re launching soon. :?)

I suggest starting with a fresh local installation of WordPress with a tool like LocalWP. Then, install your plugins one at a time, and try to set up the site to closely resemble the one experiencing the issue unstill the memory errors start showing up again. If the error does not reappear, it’s likely that your hosting provider is the source of the problem.

I know the thought of testing by setting up the site again must be frustrating. An alternative approach you can take is to set up a staging clone of your site and then test over there by disabling all plugins and setting the theme to a default theme — and then test by enabling them one by one.

You can reach out to your web host to get help in setting up a staging site.

@wpnomad , this is the first thing I tried to do, this is still happening setting Storefront theme and disabling all plugins. I made 3 staging installations, to test the problem at different levels. Now I ask you PLEASE PLEASE, can you have a look inside and see what’s going on? Maybe you see some code in console that I’m not able to read. I have query monitor installed as well. I give you all credentials you need. What are the limits of your support because I’ve been stuck on this for 1 month and a week, and the only choice I have now is to start a website from scratch. Thank you!
