    Hi Folks,

I was editing 10 published posts at the same time when there was a critical error on the server.

Now on 4 of these posts, the edit UPDATE button does not work. Nothing happens when it is pressed.

I checked DB wp_postmeta table and none of the 4 posts has any ‘_edit_lock’ line showing, or any other reasons for this issue.

In Admin > All Posts > Quick Edit, I can change post status to Draft or Pending Review or Published, but in the post editor (Classic Editor), in all of these 3 states, the UPDATE button does not work, so changes cannot be saved.

I have tested all plugins and found that “XML Sitemap & Google News” is causing the issue.

Using the “Health Check” plugin with a 2021 default theme and all others plugins off, the 4 effected posts will not save. All other posts are fine.

However, with your plugin off, I can save all 4.

Sadly, saving the effected 4 posts does not clear the issue, so when your plugin is turned on again, the problem is back.

    Please advise.

    Regards and thanks,
    Angus

  • Hi Angus, that is a weird issue. I have never heard this happen before.

Does your browser script console show any errors when you edit one of these posts? You can read here how to open the browser console: https://webmasters.stackexchange.com/questions/8525/how-do-i-open-the-javascript-console-in-different-browsers

    Hi RavanH,

Thanks for your quick reply. Yes… weird things happen on my site… constantly….. ??

FYI, I am a user, not a developer, so my skills and understanding are limited but growing.

I have checked the Firefox F12 Console and can see nothing unusual – but I’m not 100% sure what to look for.

So to help overcome that shortcoming I have made a HAR file for you if you to review.

    The link is:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/3q7zzd65i8cvoxn/www.hiskingdomprophecy.com_Archive%20%5B21-06-19%2009-41-27%5D.har?dl=0

Honestly, for me this is not a big issue, but it needs reporting nevertheless.

I can easily deactivate your plugin to edit the 4x files again, which I did to complete the mass update which went wrong. So I will not be considering changing the plugin, you can be assured of that.

If there is anything else you would like me to investigate, please let me know. Always happy to try and to learn.

    Regards and thanks,
    Angus

Hi, thanks for looking in to this ??

The HAR file is an export of the Network tab? Can you tell me what you see in the Console tab instead? It usually starts with something like:

    Navigated to https://xxxxxxx.xxx/wp-admin/post.php?post=xxxxx&action=edit
JQMIGRATE: Migrate is installed, version 3.3.2

Are there any (error) messages following that?

    Hi RavanH,

Thank you for the instructions and guidance.

I opened one file in admin edit more and copied all Console data to this file:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/kvmjhhlvemndfzf/HKP-C%20onsole-Data.docx?dl=0

The errors and all other data is included as I am not familiar with this.

    Hope the helps!
    Regards and thanks,
    Angus

Sadly, I’m not able to learn anything useful from that. Maybe it could be a conflict with another plugin like Classic Editor or TinyMCE Advanced… I’ll have to test that locally and if I do find a conflict, I’ll work on a fix.

Thanks again for the effort and the bug report!

    Hi RavanH,

Thanks for your time for the speed of your reply and for your honesty.

When I looked through the Console data I could see no obvious warning signs either. I ran the same on a post with no issues, and could see no differences between the two sets of data.

I think the critical error caused a random table setting to be changed, so I’m not fully convinced myself that it is a bug, in that something your plugin did to cause the situation.

If I didn’t know in advance that it was a total waste of time I’d consider reaching out again to Classic Editor or TinyMCE Advanced for advice… but a quick look to their forum shows that they don’t answer such issues. Been there… tried that…. ??

RavanH, let’s consider it done with, and if you get an ‘Ah Haa’ moment sometime soon, I’ll just say “Well done!” now in advance. ??

    Regards and thanks again,
    Angus
