Creative Use of Gallery Outside of Page/Post?

I seem to have NextGen 2.0.12beta working on a dev site, though the insert pop up is still jacked up with no styling.
But rather than worry about that, I’m looking for some input/guidance regarding how I might pull a gallery’s individual images (perhaps 7 images) with a function and deliver them into 7 divs that would be positioned in a sort of scattered fashion relative to my main container.
