Sub Directory Network Help!

  • Hi, here’s my situation:

    • I have a domain with wordpress installed in my blog directory (“www.domain.com/blog/”)
    • I want to create two more wordpress directories: (“www.domain.com/site1/” and (“www.domain.com/site2/”)
    • I already upgraded the wordpress backend on my blog directory with network settings from WP v3.2.1

    Question:

    • How do I create the other two sites on the network through the network settings? It seems I can only make new sites within the ‘/blog/’ directory. So instead of “www.domain.com/site1/”, I can only seem to make “www.domain.com/blog/site1”. I prefer not to have ‘blog’ in the URL.
    • I assume that I could’ve installed the network on the main domain instead of the blog directory, but I already have site pages established on it and I didn’t want to clutter up the root folder.
    • Should I instead just install separate instances of wordpress files on my preferred sub-directory folders? How would I link them all together on the dashboard?

    You can’t if WP is installed in a folder.

    https://www.expample.com/blog means ALL your sites will start with that (so you get example.com/blog/site2 and so on).

    No, there’s no workaround.

    Move it to the main folder.

    If he moved it to the root, would he (or I for that matter) be able to create a new site with the /blog/site1 ability, or would it have to be /site1/ ?

    Possibly. You would have to go into each site and manually add blog to the URL slug, and I’m not sure how that would work, since the subdirectory install slaps /blog/ onto all posts by the first blog in a sub-dir install (i.e. example.com/blog/2011/09/01/foobar/ )

    Yipes. It looks like I’ll have to create a new network that answers on a subdomain and then creates subfolders underneath ie blogs.site.com/site1/ – Sounds messy. Thanks.

    If you install in blogs.site.com then all your sites will be blogs.site.com/site1 and so on.

    However your FIRST site, blogs.site.com, will still use URLs like blogs.site.com/blog/2011/09/01/foobar/

    I’m OK with that. Will edit the permalink structure for that one site, as it’s just going to be a placeholder of the active sites underneath it.

    I have a subdir setup right now site.com/ main, another site at site.com/articles etc, and have a successful implementation of site.com/blogs/userblog1 etc, however site.com/blogs/ comes up blank due to having to rewrite my .htaccess with a new base for the other subnetwork. If I could fix that I would have to skip all this nonsense.

    You can’t remove /blog/ slug from the main site of a subdirectory install. Only posts use it, though, so if it’s a placeholder, you’re fine.
