Creating Site for School

Hello — I want to create a site for a school where each classroom has its own blog. So I think I need WPMU for this but I also want the whole site to be password protected so only parents can log in and see the content. I am kind of an amateur so any advice would be appreciated — could anyone suggest any good themes and/or plugins? Thanks!
