Creating single-docs.php in theme overrides the plugin

I want to make a few changes so that this plugin will work better with my theme as it is a little off. I tried to create a page called single-docs.php and it is a direct copy of single.php, but it doesnt work. All of the documentation elements such as the menu and stuff are missing. All i can see is the content as if it were a regular page
