Creating New WP Site whilst leaving old one

  • Hello,

    I was wondering if anyone can help me;

    Basically what I need to do is create a whole new site with a different theme etc. whilst leaving the old wp site to keep running as usual until the new one is ready to replace it.

    Now I have made my own site with wp so i’m happy with the actual making parts of a new site but I am totally clueless when it comes to this.

    Please could someone talk me through (very simply!) what I need to do to achieve this.

    It might also be worth mentioning that its not my site (its for a charity I volunteer at) so I don’t know who their host is or anything like that (please let me know if this is something I need to find out)

    I have the details to log into their current wp site but that’s pretty much it.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Create a folder and install a new WordPress there and access the folder one for development.

    Sorry I’m a bit confused by the ‘access the folder one for development’ part?

    Create a new wordpress folder (presumably on my hard drive) and then what would I need to do?

    Okay, I need to create a new version of an already existing site through wordpress.

    As in create a new one whilst the old one keeps running.

    um, okay.

    I’m not really sure how else to explain what I need help with.

    I would like to make a new website from scratch for a domain that already has a website up and running.

    I need to make the new one whilst leaving the old one still functioning.

    So that when the new site is ready, I can swap it over and make the new one live and delete the old one.

    I have no idea at all how I do that!

    So I could do with a step by step process on how to do that. And if i need to create a new WordPress folder somewhere I could do with some more details if possible.

    Sorry if it still doesn’t make sense! i’m trying!

    Nothing’s going to happen to your currently-running WordPress site, so all you need to do is install WordPress again in another directory.

    You might have to use a different database though

    Do you mean I would just need to create a new database so it doesn’t effect the old one?

    Yeah you can then import the data from your existing database, into your new database
