• Hi everyone,

I just need a bit of help/guidance with this one.
My client currently has a domain/hosting/website package with a local digital agency. The agency has their own CMS and I have no access to the FTP, MYSQL, PHP etc.

Problem is, I am designing a new website for my client using WordPress, and will need to join a new hosting platform and keep the existing domain (presumably with the current provider as they have 4yrs left on the contract).

I am thinking of joining a new hosting platform, such as GoDaddy or CrazyDomains, keeping the new site unpublished for now, and either installing/editing through this platform, or locally on the computer. Then I guess I’m hoping the current provider can point the existing domain to the new host, with the website published and ready to go. Is this a good/feasible approach?

I should mention the existing site is not built through WordPress so it will be a completely new build.

    Thanks so much.

  • Hi!

Once you’ve built the site on the new platform/host and it’s all set to use the old domain, yep, ask the old host to change the domain’s DNS and point it to the new one.

DNS propagation can take a while (24-48 hours), so don’t immediately take down the old account/site. Some visitors might be taken to the old site during this time, if they try to access the old domain. But once DNS is fully propagated, all should go to the new one.
