I’m attempting to create a manual order, but can’t get the tax to work for customers who shouldn’t be charged tax. My store is in the UK. I’ve have one standard tax rate as 20% for country code GB. Tax is set to ‘Calculate tax based on customer shipping address’. In the normal checkout shipments to GB are charged 20% tax, all other countries have prices without tax, which is correct. However, in the manual order creation for non UK customers, the 20% tax still applies, even after clicking the recalculate button. Do I need to change how I have the tax rules configured?

  • Hi @puddle123,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your query. It’s great that you’ve set up a standard tax rate for GB and that it’s working as expected during normal checkout. For manual orders, however, it seems there might be a step missing that’s causing the 20% tax rate to still apply.

When creating a manual order, after entering the customer’s shipping address, you should be able to select the appropriate tax class for the order. Since you’re dealing with non-UK customers who shouldn’t be charged tax, you’ll want to ensure that you’re selecting the ‘Zero Rate’ tax class for these orders. Here’s what I suggest:

    1. Go to the manual order screen and enter the customer details.
    2. Under the ‘Items’ section, when adding products, ensure that the tax class is set to ‘Zero Rate’.
    3. If the tax still shows up, try clicking the ‘Recalculate’ button after setting the tax class to ‘Zero Rate’.

If this doesn’t resolve the issue, could you please confirm if you have the ‘Zero Rate’ tax class set up in your WooCommerce Tax settings? You can find this under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax. This class should have a tax rate of 0% for all countries.

Please try the above steps and let us know how it goes.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

On step 2. to set the tax class to zero rate – below the products in the order, I have clicked the button ‘Add item(s)’ and then ‘Add Tax’ and selected a Zero Rate option. VAT (GB) 20% is still shown in the order list, so I have clicked the cross next to its name to remove it. However, when I click ‘Recalculate’ the Zero Rate tax that I added before disappears and the GB 20% tax reappears.

On your point of setting a tax rate of 0% for all countries. Does this require setting a row for every country, every country code? Or is there a way to do this universally?

    Hey, @puddle123!

I’ve ran some tests on my website.

I set up different taxes rates for two different countries. Then I created an order and tried addresses from both of those countries and also another one that does not have taxes set up. Every time I changed the shipping address and clicked recalculate it would add or remove the tax as set up. So this by default should be done automatically.

Are you using any plugins that interfere with the taxes?

This happens with any product you add or just one?

Can you share some screenshots with us so we can take a look at your set up?

I recommend using https://snipboard.io. You can share the direct link to the image as a response to this topic.

    We need screenshots of:

    • WooCommerce > Settings > Taxes
    • WooCommerce > Settings > Taxes > Standard Rates
    • If you have reduced rates and zero rates, please also share those
    • The add order page (please remove/blur sensitive information from it before sharing like street address, phone, name, email. But you can leave the country)

Furthermore, I’d like to understand your site properly. Please share with us the System Status Report which you can find via WooCommerce > Status > Get system report > Copy for support.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Have a wonderful day!

Hi, thanks for your help. Your point about plugins helped me troubleshoot it. When I disabled the Yith currency converter, it worked as intended.
