• I don’t intend to copy Tripadvisor completely! ;o)

However, I’m working on a website where users can rate movie theaters – more or less in the same way as people can rate say restaurants or hotels at Tripadvisor.

Since I’m fairly new to WordPress, I’m not sure if this is completely possible with WordPress? Shortly put, I’m looking to make two sections: 1) Users can rate movie theaters they’ve visited; and 2) Users can browse through movie theaters rated by other users.

Ideally, each section uses the Google Places API as the point of departure meaning that users – whether they’ll be rating or browsing – will start typing the name of the movie theater in a search field and the name would slowly auto-appear along with each letter being typed in.

Then, after having selected the movie theater in question, users would either be presented with an overview of ratings made by other users (BROWSE) or a form with fixed questions, text boxes, the ability to upload pictures, etc. (RATE).

    My big headaches are:

    1) Is it possible to incorporate Google Places API in WordPress? If so, can anyone steer me in the right direction?
    2) Are there any plugins that allow users to customize contents (e.g. YES/NO questions, text boxes for user comments, upload pictures, etc.) of the rating forms?
    3) How do I secure that forms filled out are saved and made easily available/visible to other users?

I don’t expect anyone to hand me everything of a silver tray, so I someone can steer me in the right direction for some if not all three points mentioned above, I’d be EXTREMELY thankful!

I suggest you look at the various business directory plugins and themes

Also, do a similar search on Google as there are paid themes and plugins for this purpose.

    Dear Steve,

    Thank you for your feedback!

I have browsed through the links which contain very useful info!
In terms of the LOOK of my website, I guess I can go with the existing theme or use one of the directory themes.

However, my main concern is more how I can build the FORM that allows users of my website to submit their reviews of the movie theater? With the Business Directory plug-in don’t I “just” get the framework for building my own directory (from scratch)?
In the FORM, when users start to type the name of the movie theater in question, I’d like the text to start auto-completing as the user type – just like when you search on Google.com. Isn’t it possible to add Google Places to the “backside” of the form allowing users to “draw” from that database before starting to build their own database?

Anything’s possible. It depends on whether you can find the right plugins and/or your skills as a developer. For a site as complex as the on you you describe, I think you might be best off by hiring a developer to help you with this.

I know that – if I had the money – I could ask someone to do the entire site for me. However, I don’t – that’s why I’m asking for help here. Besides – it an exciting task to see if I can end up doing most of it myself…
