• I want to start making my own custom themes and templates, I’ve been reading for a few weeks (Theme Development, Stepping Into Templates, Template Hierarchy etc) and I got the gist of how the files and folders are setup, and the scripts are laid out. I’m a graphic/web design student, I have basic knowledge of web programming and CMS (but a beginner in PHP), so I’m not a total newbie. Basically my question is if I want to make a more complicated template, beyond just a blogroll, with blocks of custom content on the front page that can be edited in the back-end, where do I begin?

I don’t want to just keep using other people’s themes and slightly changing them using CSS, that feels like cheating especially if someone will offer me money to build them a site.

  • I’d suggest that you start by creating basic themes that conform to the www.remarpro.com theme review guidelines. when you can code theme to that level, then you’re ready to move onto more complex themes.
