Creating a test site?

Hello,

I have minimal website development experience. I put in all the content of my website but I’m ready to make a pretty serious change to my front page that I think will take about 3 to 4 days to tweak. If my website is https://www.example.com, I’d like to set up my testing on test.example.com but have no idea what steps I need to take to set that up.
