I own the site https://andrewmaccabe.com and I am currently designing my portfolio.

I am also designing a site for my friend, I usually use Adobe Muse for static websites but as my friends site will also be a portfolio I thought it be better to use something like wordpress to make it much easier for him to manage his own site in the future without me having to constantly update it for him.

Unfortunately he isnt willing to set up a domain until we have a design complete and ready for uploading and wordpress doesnt work without a domain.

My question [FINALLY] is how would I go about creating a whole new site under a sub-domain of https://andrewmaccabe.com without effecting the actual andrewmaccabe.com site/content? And how would I then take that sub-domain site design and transfer it to my clients domain once registered?

  • You can install WordPress under either:

    1. https://andrewmaccabe.com/yourfriendsite, or
    2. https://yourfriendsite.andrewmaccabe.com

1 is subfolder installation, & 2 is subdomain installation. You can create the folder under root directory, in most case, it looks like this:

    “public_html/yourfriendsite”

If you want to use subdomain installation (2), then you need to do some work to add yourfriendsite as subdomain, and point it to the folder.

Depend on what hosting service you are using, (let’s say cPanel). When you install WordPress via the cPanel app, you should have a field to specify where to install WordPress. No matter which one you choose, 1 or 2, the result is the same. It all goes to yourfriendsite subfolder. The only difference is the URL accessing it.

If you install WordPress manually, I believe we don’t need further explanation.

I have created the subdomain https://wesley.andrewmaccabe.com and have installed a seperate wordpress site into the directory ‘root/wesley’

but when I go to https://wesley.andrewmaccabe.com it just displays the https://andrewmaccabe.com site?!?!

Even though I have installed a completely new wordpress site to the subdomain… I have tried completely uninstalling the site and using cpanel to create the subdomain and install wordpress but when I choose to install wordpress to the subdomain it just installs it to the root folder overwriting andrewmaccabe.com

    I am very confused

    [SOLVED]

Just had to edit another setting in the cpanel to make the subdomain point to /wesley subdirectory silly me

How did you go about transferring the completed site from the sub-domain to your friends personal domain?
