Creating a search.php template

I am new to WP and am creating a theme. I have created a search.php, however, am not sure how to code it. I’ve tried numerous things, but to no avail. When a search is done, the site is bounced back to the home page. I’m thinking I need to add something to the function file, but I’m just not sure.

Any and all help would be appreciated! (I’m spending WAY too much time on this…)
