Creating a News Section

I’ve created a news section using custom post types. If there is a better way to do the below, please guide me in the right direction.

Within the general feed of articles there are two types of articles. Ones we have written ourselves and ones we are linking to on other sites. If i click on these, they should either open a page via permalink to read the article that we have written or click on an article that is not written by us and instead link to a different website’s article. I’ve used Advanced Custom Fields to achieve this but for the articles that are just links to other sites, there are empty pages/permalinks for these.

My question is, how do i stop a custom post type from creating a permalink/seperate page. I’ve tried making the post private but it STILL generates a page and doesn’t help with the articles that we have written since a permalink won’t be generated. Is there a better way to do this?
