• Hi, I’m new to WordPress and coding in general. However, I know HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP. I recently bought hosting and set up WordPress to start a music blog. I would like to create a theme by myself, but I’m not sure where to start.

I bought my hosting from BlueHost, and used their one-click install. To get to my dashboard I simply need to go through their cPanel. It never downloaded any folder that needed to be extracted, like the one you get if you click the red download button at the top of this page.

I was wondering how I start creating the theme. At the dashboard, If I go to Themes > Editor, I get to where I want, except it’s the 2011 theme is there any way to create a new theme? Do I need to use a separate text editor if I’m using the one in the dashboard? Thanks.

Thanks Kevin, but I guess what I’m trying to ask is, how do I start creating a new theme if I’m not using my computer as a server? I have found many wonderful tutorials online but all of them use their own computers as servers. I am using BlueHost.

The best way is to set up a server on your own computer. If you are worried about security, it does not have to be on-line.

It’s easy to install XAMPP on your computer, and use it as a localhost for Web Development.

    Google XAMPP

For Text Editing I use both Aptana Studio and Notepad++

Ok, so once I create a theme on my own server, I can upload it to BlueHost right? There’s no way to do it from BlueHost?

You can do it from you host if you want, but your site will be down while you are doing it.

Here is a link for theme development

You may want to review some themes also, that is a great way to learn how others are structuring themes.

I’ll remember the links next time Michael…good idea
