• Hello, I would like to know if it’s possible to create a completely custom theme using the “Create a theme based on blocks” feature in WordPress. When I export this theme to install it on another clean WordPress installation, will there be any references to the plugin author or references to the default theme used for creating the custom theme?

Furthermore, when I export the theme to install it on another clean WordPress installation, will I need to install your plugin as well or keep the default WordPress theme, or can I do without them? The goal is to create a custom theme with no references to any WordPress auxiliary tools, such as your visual editor. I hope I’ve been clear. Thank you in advance for your response!

Hey @fedeflooro It’s definitely possible to use the plugin to create a totally standalone theme (without references).

    • You can use the plugin to export a fresh theme, or to start a new totally blank one. It doesn’t need to be a child theme (which would requite the parent one in place).
    • The plugin won’t need to be installed on user’s computers
    • If there were any residual code/comments which refer to the original theme or the plugin, you’d be able to manually edit those to remove them.

I hope that helps ?? But please feel free to follow up with any other questions you may have.

I was conducting some experiments and noticed that even when I export the theme and install it as new without adding any plugins, in the “Appearance” section of WordPress, I don’t see the usual traditional subsections of WordPress, such as “Themes,” “Customize,” “Widgets,” and “Menus.” Instead, there is an option called “Editor” that contains a theme builder similar to tools like Divi or Elementor.

This poses a problem because it is evident upon a simple inspection that the theme layout has been created using a block builder. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

This is expected. You are working with a Blocks theme and all of those options (Menus, Customize, Widgets) are handled in the Editor itself.

In other words, this plugin allows you to create new Block themes but it does not create “Classic” themes.

This poses a problem because it is evident upon a simple inspection that the theme layout has been created using a block builder.

Could you elaborate on why this is a problem? Would you like to maybe prevent users from editing the theme? Could you provide a bit more context?

    Thank you!

Yes! I would like to prevent users from editing the theme.

I see! I think you will find this post very useful, @fedeflooro.
