Creating a child theme for an existing website

I am wanting to create a child theme for my existing website and do some from the existing parent theme being used. I’ve created child themes for new websites, but this one was built without initially setting up a child theme. Are there any straight forward instructions on how to accomplish this without breaking the website? Thank you!
