• Hello folks,
I have a website that has been up for quite sometime so it has a fair amount of content on it.

What I need/want to do is basically start from scratch, but import all comments, posts, and pictures (okay that’s not really scratch).

I do have some spare domains that I can use to hold it for a moment, but basically..

How would I go about transferring all the files from one domain to another and then back again?

Main Reason: I am installing a brand new theme that has a lot of functions and pre-planned templates. It isn’t working so well with what I have now, so I want to create it from scratch and import my content without losing everything.

Any tips or advice on how to go about this? I apologize for ramblyness, its very late here.

Edit: I have hostgator and have access to ftp.

  • Yeah WordPress has this as one of their default tools. All you have to do is login to your admin and then go to Tools => Export. Export your data from your one site and then import it to the other WordPress install with Tools => Import.

    Does that make sense?

hi! Very sorry for the delayed answer. Haven’t had an opportunity to work on this in the past week.
My issue is that the last time I attempted to use a back up you indicatedlf, it deleted all of my images and my posts all had to have their images re-added and EVERY post had to be edited to fix the issue.

Someone informed me that this is entirely normal and I replied with “WTH is the point of having a backup if it doesn’t actually backup!?” ??
Anyways, so maybe as an alternative, because I’m paranoid.

My issue comes about is that due to switching themes, I need the default settings on my current site to go away and be replaced by the new themes default. All I want from my current site are the posts/images/comments and their relation to each other.

if you’re on hostgator use the back up wizard in the cpanel, make a backup of your site’s database and then make a back up of your site’s home directory (you won’t need everything in there but if you’re closing that account down eventually it’s a good plan to have a copy of everything in it).

you can also do the export option in wordpress too, never hurts to have as many different backups from different sources when going into something like this

set up your new hosting account and then create a new empty database (and user) with the same name as the one from your previous account with the same username and password.

import your old database content into your new empty database.

use your ftp client to upload the wordpress files and folders from your old site into the new hosting account’s public_html folder.

point your domain name to the new account ip address and nameservers and wait for propagation and then check to see if the site has resolved properly. then log in and start making changes etc.
