Create Top Menu Links

    Hello,
    As a warning, I am new to WordPress and have no coding skills.
    I am currently setting up a website using the Twenty Fourteen theme.
    How can I add menu items on top of the homepage as seen in the Twenty Fourteen template example?
    These appear to the left of the green search icon at the top right.
