• I’m very green at this but I’ve installed wordpress through crazy domains one click app install process but the link to my wp-admin returns a 404 error page or does not load at all. Is there something else I need to do before I can access wp admin?

  • Hi there @tess.copeland,

Does this happen after login, or does the error show up after you log in? You can go to https://yoursite.com/wp-login.php directly to figure this out. Also, does the front page of your website load properly?

Normally you don’t need to do anything special to access the admin so this is either an installation error or in rare cases perhaps it could be a file permission error which you could talk to your host about.

    Hi @danielpataki

I haven’t been able to reach a wp login screen at all! The direct link subdomain I’ve installed wp on returns an error page, as does wp-admin and wp-login.php. I’ve contacted my host about the issue, but wanted to rule out if I had done anything wrong.

Is it possible to share the link? I doubt it will yield anything useful but its worth a shot. This sounds like the installer didn’t do its job properly but it’s difficult to say. If you installed it on a subdomain are you sure the subdomain has been created?

If you have FTP access to your website or you can upload files through a control panel I would recommend installing WordPress yourself. There is a long article on it in the Codex.

The subdomain is test.feelingpurpose.com and it definitely exists at my host. I do have FTP access but was hoping to bypass this route as I’ve no idea how to use it :/ it definitely requires some more reading on my part.

Ah, there is some more info here. This is not a 404 error, the error is caused by a DNS lookup issue, here’s the fill message Chrome spits out:

The server at test.feelingpurpose.com can’t be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website’s name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network.

I have my money on the subdomain not being set up. In some cases I have seen a 10-30 minutes lag between setting up subdomains and them actually working. I’m not sure what the reason for this is, but it has happened.

While this still could be a WordPress issue it seems less likely, I would definitely wait to see what your host has to say. While you wait I would recommend taking a look at using FTP ?? It would allow you to see if the WordPress files are in the correct folder and so on.

Thanks @danielpataki! I will wait and see. I did download Filezilla and have been trying (unsuccessfully) to connect to server which keeps timing out. This makes me think I’m inputting the wrong data even though I am following the instructions ??

    Hi @tess.copeland,

That is possible, although it could also point to an issue your host is having. If you input the wrong username/password you can an invalid authentication attempt. Your host is either having issues at the moment, you you entered the incorrect FTP server.

I’m pretty sure you should not use your subdomain here but server configurations vary. If you do have to use the subdomain and it is timing out it again points to an issue with your host, since it isn’t finding the subdomain.

I think I’ve exhausted all potential data input combinations so I’ll wait and see what my host says. Thanks for your help @danielpataki I’ll let you know what happens!

Please do, I hope it gets resolved quickly for you!

All fixed @danielpataki. Like you said it was an issue on the host end and they helped me set up the subdomain. Working beautifully now, thanks!

Hi @tess.copeland, I’m glad all is well, good luck with the site ??
