• We discovered a very strange behavior on our site this morning. All posts have their category as their URL. For example:

A post on Tang categorized under food should have this as the URL:
    https://www.retroland.com/tang

    Mysteriously, it’s now:
    https://www.retroland.com/food

To make matters stranger and worse, there’s no way to edit the URL on the post’s editing screen.

This is effectively making our entire site useless. No idea what’s causing it. Deactivating recently updated programs doesn’t help. Re-doing the .htaccess permalinks settings doesn’t help (though reverting to the default permalink structure does fix it.)

I’m at a loss. Any ideas? HUGE thanks to whoever can help us solve this.

    Many thanks,

    Matt

  • Try resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting via Settings -> Permalinks. If this works, then review Using_Permalinks before setting a custom permalink structure back up again.

Hi Esmi… as I wrote, I reverted to the default permalinks and that fixed it… but re-doing permalinks (even from a blank .htaccess file) with the custom setting I want (%category%) results in the incorrect behavior.

Note that if I try another custom setting — say, %postname% — it works like it should. What is it about the %category% custom permalink structure that might be causing this problem, I wonder… and why now?

    Thanks for any insight,

    Matt

Thanks; I’ve seen those… but the thing is, the site has been behaving fine for over a year with category in the custom permalink. What would cause this issue now? And why does the site behave fine with the /%postname%/ custom structure but not %category%… and again, why just now?

Could there be something in my theme files causing it to misbehave when the category is used for custom permalinks?

    Thanks again,

    Matt

As those links explain, starting a permalink structure with %category% causes problems. In my experience, a higher percentage of sites that use such a structure also experience permalink problems compared to those using recommended structures. My guess is that your site has hit a threshold in terms of content whereby this structure is now creating issues.

Thanks… but man, it’s irritating. I guess we’ll live with it for now. Otto suggests that this might be rectified in 3.3. Hope so!

    Thanks again.
