Crashes our site

  • We have been using this nice plugin for several months now, unfortunately a couple of days ago it suddenly started crashing our entire site.

    We have over 17K members, so I’m not sure if this might be related, I Know the Leira folder with the avatars is huge.

    Out of the blue the site started to become unreachable, upon investigation we realize this plugin was causing it, the memory had gone over the roof (and we are on a dedicated server with 32GB of RAM)

    I’m not sure what exactly went wrong, but would love if a fix could be applied, this is the nicest letter plugin I have found.

    Sorry to hear that. I never had the opportunity to test the plugin in a site which such amount of users. In theory shouldn’t be a problem but who knows.
    I will try to find a solution, but, i will need your help understand what is going on:
    Did you update the plugin recently?
    Did the system started crashing after the update or it start failing suddenly?
    What other plugins you have in your wp installation that might use user avatars?

    Thanks for replying so fast, I know the plugin had an update a while ago, but the problem did not start to happen after that update. Several other plugins did receive other updates as well, but honestly I don’t remember now which ones exactly.

    It did start to fail suddenly though because I remember being at work, not updating any plugins or touching any server configuration and I noticed the site had become unreachable.

    We have WPDiscuz which uses Avatars and it is supported by Leira, and we also use WPForo by the same plugin creator (GVectors) which also uses Avatars, not sure if it is supported but we never had a problem with it.

    If you need access to the server I would be glad to share.

    Well I think the problem is going to be related with those plugins you mentioned.
    I will check both of it and how they implement the avatar display process.
    I will try to find a solution as soon as possible.

    Sorry for taking so long to replay, it has been a busy month for me.
    Well, I did a code coverage in an installation i made with Leira Letter Avatar, WPDiscuz and WPForo and i couldnt find any bottleneck in leira avatar plugin. What I did notice is that WPForo does actually consume more resource than WPDiscuz and Leira Avatar together. I also did some stress test and all looks good. Kind of hard to replicate your exact environment, so who knows.
    Is there a way you can check your server logs, or those logs with the one you determined the error in leira avatar, so it can point me to the right direction.
    Im kind of lost at this point, I dont know what could be happening ??

    A few weeks ago I re-enabled Leira Letter Avatar on our site and I have not experienced that issue anymore.

    Let’s hope it stays this way ?? who knows it might have been a weird isolated incident. I’ll let you know if it happens again.

    A few months after and again Leira crashed the site, this time after disabling everything trying to figure out what the problem was, I found out that Leira was the troublemaker. I had to disable it on our site again ??

    Hi @realact

    Thanks for the feed back.
    Acording to the line where the error was found the problem is related with the option “use grvatar if available”.
    This particular option is expensive computacionally speaking as it requests the user avatar from gravatar.
    Maybe there was some kind gravatar issue at the moment or ,most probably, there is a comunication issue with gravatar system.
    I will further investigate the issue, now i have where to look at. in the meanwhile you should be fine if you uncheck the plugin setting I mentioned above.
